Crisis Rocks NDC as Obi Sues Okonkwo, Aspirants Reject Primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is in serious disarray as unresolved primary election disputes continue to tear the opposition party apart, just months ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Following the conclusion of primaries across several states, multiple aspirants have rejected the results, alleging widespread manipulation, name substitution, and imposition of candidates by party leaders.

In Lagos, a governorship aspirant declined the results, describing the process as a “charade” and calling for a fresh primary. In Kaduna, seven House of Representatives aspirants rejected the results, accusing the party of substituting their names without consent.

Adding to the turmoil, the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has filed a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against his kinsman and former ally, Kenneth Okonkwo, who alleged that Obi and other NDC leaders demanded illicit payments from aspirants.

The party’s national leadership has yet to issue an official statement addressing the growing litany of disputes. Political analysts warn that if the crises are not resolved quickly, the NDC risks imploding before the 2027 elections, undoing months of political alignment efforts.
