State Police Bill Reaches State Assemblies, Sparks Nationwide Debate

The State Police Bill has officially been sent to state assemblies across Nigeria, marking a significant step toward potential security restructuring.

The bill, which seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow states to establish and control their own police forces, was transmitted to state legislatures following passage at the federal level. State lawmakers are now expected to deliberate and vote on the proposal.

Proponents argue that state-controlled policing will address the country’s worsening security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes, by enabling localized law enforcement strategies. Critics, however, warn of political manipulation and possible abuse by state governors.

The proposal requires approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 state assemblies to become law. Analysts say the bill’s fate now hinges on regional political dynamics and governors’ influence over state legislators.

Security experts have urged citizens to monitor proceedings in their respective state houses of assembly as debates commence in the coming weeks.
