The South African government has ruled out paying compensation to Nigerians affected by previous xenophobic attacks, stating that there is no legal basis for such claims under the country’s laws.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the clarification followed renewed discussions over demands for compensation by some Nigerians who suffered losses during attacks on foreign nationals in different parts of South Africa.
According to South African authorities, while the government condemns all forms of violence and remains committed to protecting everyone living within its borders, compensation cannot be granted solely on the basis of nationality or as a general response to xenophobic incidents.
The government maintained that victims seeking redress are expected to pursue available legal channels where applicable, adding that law enforcement agencies remain responsible for investigating and prosecuting those involved in criminal acts.
