Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the proposed increase in registration fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
CDA News Nigeria gathered that both opposition leaders described the government’s decision as a positive step that would ease the financial burden on millions of Nigerian parents and students preparing for external examinations.
According to statements issued by their respective camps, Atiku and Obi commended the authorities for listening to public concerns following widespread criticism of the planned fee adjustment. They also urged the government to continue prioritising policies that improve access to affordable and quality education.
Education stakeholders have also welcomed the suspension, noting that the proposed increase would have placed additional financial pressure on many households already grappling with economic challenges. They called for sustained investment in the education sector to ensure examination bodies operate efficiently without imposing excessive costs on candidates.
