Akwete, Abia State — Former member of the House of Representatives and President, GLOBE Legislators World Wide, Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has commended the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Akwete in Abia State, describing it as a significant boost for indigenous industries and local economic development.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Onuigbo said the First Lady’s visit to the renowned Akwete weaving community highlights the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage while promoting local industries capable of creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
According to him, indigenous enterprises such as the Akwete textile industry have the potential to contribute significantly to the nation’s economic diversification if supported through deliberate government policies, investments and improved access to markets.
“The First Lady’s visit to Akwete is a strong demonstration of support for indigenous industries. Empowering local enterprises is essential to achieving sustainable economic growth, job creation and national development,” Onuigbo said.
He further urged governments at all levels, development partners and the private sector to invest in traditional industries, skills development and entrepreneurship programmes to enhance productivity and preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Observers say renewed attention to indigenous industries could strengthen rural economies, promote tourism and expand opportunities for artisans across the country.
