Trump Supports My Plan to Return Fuel Subsidy – Atiku

…ADC Candidate Says US President Backs Targeted Production Subsidy for Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that United States President Donald Trump is backing his proposed policy to restore fuel subsidy in Nigeria if he wins the 2027 presidential election .

CDA News Nigeria reports that Atiku made the claim in a statement issued by his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday, titled “Atiku boasts of stakeholders, Trump support on fuel subsidy.” The former vice president insisted that his proposal would focus on supporting domestic production and refining while making fuel more affordable for Nigerians .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that Atiku’s proposed “Production Subsidy” aims to support locally produced petroleum products rather than relying heavily on imported fuel. He argued that increasing domestic supply would help reduce pressure on consumers and allow Nigerians to benefit from lower prices at filling stations .

Atiku drew parallels with the United States’ approach to energy policy, stating: “America understands the importance of supporting strategic energy production. Trump supports the fuel subsidy return” . He criticised the Tinubu administration for granting waivers and concessions to multinational oil companies while opposing relief measures for ordinary Nigerians .

The ADC candidate has repeatedly clarified that his plan is not a return to Nigeria’s discredited import-subsidy regime but a targeted, transparently budgeted intervention designed to reduce the cost of living . Meanwhile, the Presidency has described the proposal as “archaic” and warned it could lead to job losses and cripple the economy . Economic think-tank IMPI also cautioned that the policy risks plunging Nigeria into deeper economic challenges .
