Oba of Benin Suspends Royal Praise Singers Over Performance at Igbinedion’s Birthday

…Monarch Strips Leader of Traditional Title for Violating Sacred Benin Custom

The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has indefinitely suspended the Isikhuan royal praise singers group for allegedly violating palace rules and Benin traditional customs .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the suspension followed allegations that the group performed at the 92nd birthday celebration of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, at his residence without authorisation from the palace . The performance reportedly involved a traditional rendition exclusively reserved for the Benin monarch .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Oba also stripped the group’s leader, Juliet Omogui, of her traditional title, Okao, and directed her to return the traditional headgear known as Okuku to the palace pending further directives . The monarch’s decision was communicated by the Obazelu of Benin, Chief Osaro Idah, during an emergency meeting at the palace on Sunday, September 6, 2026 .

At the meeting, members of the Isikhuan group were given an opportunity to explain their roles in the incident . The palace chiefs expressed displeasure over what they described as disrespect to the Benin monarchy, questioning why Chief Igbinedion, a respected chief well-versed in Benin customs, permitted the performance in his honour .

The development comes as the palace reaffirms its commitment to preserving Benin customs and traditions. This is not the first time Chief Igbinedion has faced traditional issues with the palace; he was suspended in January 2008 for presenting royal beads to visiting King Zulu but was later pardoned in June 2012 after a public apology .
