Abuja, Nigeria — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced the nationwide enforcement of its ban on the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the enforcement exercise aims to reduce alcohol abuse, particularly among young people, and ensure compliance with existing regulatory directives issued by the agency.
According to NAFDAC, enforcement officers have begun seizing prohibited alcoholic products from manufacturers, distributors and retailers found violating the directive. The agency warned that offenders would face sanctions in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
“The nationwide enforcement exercise has commenced, and all stakeholders are expected to comply with the directive on sachet alcohol and small-pack alcoholic beverages,” NAFDAC stated.
The agency urged manufacturers, distributors and vendors to cooperate with enforcement officials and adhere strictly to the regulations. It also advised consumers to purchase only approved alcoholic products packaged in line with existing guidelines.
Public health experts have welcomed the move, saying it could help curb underage drinking and reduce the health and social risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption.
NAFDAC said the enforcement exercise would continue across the country to ensure full compliance and safeguard public health.
