LAGOS, Nigeria — A series of violent attacks over the years has claimed the lives of several prominent members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos, with the recent killing of the union’s Organising Secretary, Toba Ajiboye (popularly known as Toba Ijaya), renewing concerns over recurring violence within the transport sector.
CDA News Nigeria reports that past victims include Alhaji Saula Saka, Azeez Otun (Ashake), Olayemi Eniola (Esi Oluwo), Kunle Mamowora (Mammok), Ganiyu Ayinla (Pinero) and other notable transport union figures who lost their lives in separate violent incidents over the years. Authorities have investigated several of the cases, although many remain unresolved.
The recent killing of Toba Ajiboye has again highlighted longstanding concerns over violence associated with transport union activities in Lagos, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures and reforms.
Security experts and stakeholders have urged law enforcement agencies to intensify investigations into the attacks and ensure those responsible are brought to justice. They also called for measures to address the underlying causes of violence within the transport union system.
