President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed how he sacrificed his ambition to contest for the Senate to concentrate on securing the election of former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Tinubu recounted the political decision while reflecting on the importance of sacrifice and loyalty in leadership.
According to the President, he had already obtained and completed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination form to contest for the Senate. However, he reconsidered after realising that Babatunde Fashola was the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, while then-President Olusegun Obasanjo was determined to win the state for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Tinubu said he feared that pursuing his own Senate ambition would divide his attention and weaken efforts to secure victory for Fashola. He disclosed that he subsequently travelled to Abuja with Ganiyu Solomon, withdrew his Senate nomination form at the INEC office, and asked Solomon to contest instead.
According to Tinubu, the decision enabled him to focus fully on the governorship campaign, which resulted in Fashola winning the Lagos governorship election, while Ganiyu Solomon also emerged victorious in the Senate race.
The President said the experience demonstrates that political leadership often requires personal sacrifice for the collective good.
