The Federal Government has approved N14.6 billion for the procurement of modern boats and ferries to improve safety and transportation on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr Bola Oyebamiji, disclosed that the new vessels will replace unsafe wooden boats and will be deployed to riverine states such as Niger, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Kebbi.
Oyebamiji, now the APC governorship candidate in Osun State, stated that the initiative aims to reduce accidents, enhance food supply chains, and boost trade by enabling faster and cheaper movement of farm produce.
He noted that while outdated boats contribute to accidents, human error—including operation under substance influence—remains a major challenge, necessitating improved training and supervision.
