France captain Kylian Mbappé has strongly condemned racist comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla following France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Mbappé described the senator as “despicable” and “not worthy of her position” after she posted insulting and racist remarks about the Real Madrid forward on social media following Saturday’s match in Philadelphia.
In a response on X, Mbappé said Amarilla did not represent the values of Paraguay, praising the South American nation’s passion and commitment throughout the tournament while condemning what he described as her “uninhibited racism.”
The controversy erupted after Amarilla referred to Mbappé in offensive racial terms and questioned his French identity. The comments have sparked widespread criticism, with France’s Sports Minister, Marina Ferrari, describing the remarks as “abject, disgraceful and unacceptable,” particularly because they came from an elected public official.
Mbappé, whose second-half penalty secured France’s place in the World Cup quarter-finals, is now preparing to lead Les Bleus against Morocco on Thursday.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the incident has reignited calls for stronger action against racism in football and on social media platforms.
