The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has renewed his attack on former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Chairman, Chief Bode George, insisting he has no regrets over blocking his bid to lead the party nationally and branding him a politician who has failed to deliver electoral victories for the PDP in Lagos State since 1999.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the minister spoke through a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in which Wike suggested that George’s ongoing frustration has been worsened by the rise of Deji Doherty, a Lagos PDP figure he is said to oppose.
According to the statement, Wike said George’s anger stems from being denied the party’s National Chairmanship position, adding that he does not regret the decision. The minister explained that the chairmanship slot was reserved for the South-South zone at the material time, a stance he said George resisted because he believed the position was his by right.
Wike went further to recount a personal encounter with George at his Maitama residence in Abuja, describing how he had visited as a sitting governor to smooth things over following a party convention, only to be nearly turned away by George’s wife before former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, stepped in to intervene.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Wike dismissed George as a leader whose standing in the party should not rest on titles or history as a founding father, but on the ability to win elections, a test he said George has decisively failed. The minister described the ex-Navy chief as “a complete disaster” on that score.
Wike said the PDP had continued to accommodate George despite viewing him as having no real value within the party. He accused George of turning Nigerian politics into a spectacle, with associates deployed to television stations to keep up the fight on his behalf.
To back his claims, Wike pointed to George’s own polling unit, Unit 001 in Ward E2 on Evans Street, Lagos Island, noting that the APC outpolled the PDP there in the 2019 presidential election, and that the PDP recorded just four votes at the unit in 2023 after George moved his voter’s card to Eti-Osa.
The fresh comments mark an escalation in the simmering rivalry between Wike and George within the PDP, a fault line that has persisted amid the party’s broader leadership and zoning disputes ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.
