The Federal Government has deployed a dedicated Passport Intervention Team from the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to the United Kingdom, as part of ongoing efforts to ease and streamline passport applications for Nigerians in the diaspora.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the deployment followed a directive from the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, instructing the dispatch of the team from Abuja to the UK. According to a statement issued by the NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the intervention team is scheduled to arrive in the United Kingdom on Monday, August 10, 2026, and will work in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission to facilitate the processing and issuance of pending, new, and renewal passport applications.
“As part of the exercise, the intervention team will visit designated cities across the United Kingdom to conduct passport enrolment and processing, thereby enabling eligible applicants in different parts of the country to access the exercise,” the statement read.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the intervention is open to Nigerians with pending passport applications, first-time applicants, and existing passport holders whose documents have less than one year remaining before expiry and who wish to commence the renewal process. Applicants are required to present their completed application forms along with proof of payment during enrolment.
The NIS stated that a detailed schedule for the exercise, including designated cities, dates, venues, and enrolment times, would be communicated separately in due course. The Service specifically cautioned applicants against showing up at any location until the official schedule has been released.
“Applicants are therefore advised not to attend any location until the relevant schedule has been officially communicated and to monitor the official communication channels of the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom for further details,” the statement added.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the intervention comes amid a reported surge in passport applications from Nigerians resident in the UK, with the exercise expected to significantly reduce the backlog affecting applicants across the country. The Federal Government has continued to prioritise similar diaspora-focused interventions in recent months as part of broader efforts to improve access to consular and immigration services for Nigerians living abroad.
