Ferrari’s First EV Fetches Record $40m at Auction

Ferrari’s first all-electric vehicle, the Luce “Tailor Made,” has sold for a staggering $40 million at a charity auction, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

The sale took place at an RM Sotheby’s event during Monterey Car Week in California, surpassing the previous record of $26 million set last year by Ferrari’s customised Daytona SP3, also sold for charity.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the vehicle sold, tagged “Chassis 0,” was the first production unit from Ferrari’s Luce programme. It came with a bespoke Madreperla Semi-Gloss paint finish that shifts colour between green and violet depending on lighting, alongside a custom leather interior.

The auction defied a rocky start for the Luce, which faced backlash from critics and a dip in Ferrari’s share price after its unveiling in May over concerns the four-door, four-motor electric model strayed too far from the brand’s traditional identity.

Despite the criticism, the Luce boasts over 1,000 horsepower, a 0–100km/h sprint of 2.5 seconds, and a claimed range beyond 500km from its 122kWh battery. It was designed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the studio founded by former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive.

Proceeds from the auction will support educational initiatives through the Ferrari Foundation, the company confirmed.

The record sale offers Ferrari a strong signal of investor and collector confidence in its electric future, even as its share price has since recovered following stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings.
