ILORIN — As Nigeria’s university leaders converge in Ilorin for the 37th Annual General Assembly of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), the case of a professor in Port Harcourt has brought renewed urgency to the conversation on health and wellbeing in academia.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the case involving Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies with SPDC/RENAISSANCE has become a reference point in ongoing discussions about stress, burnout, and inadequate welfare structures for university staff . The assembly, themed “Building Resilient Universities for Nigeria,” is holding from August 17 to 20, 2026, at the University of Ilorin, with President Bola Tinubu expected to address the gathering .
CDA News Nigeria reports that leading the discourse on mental health will be the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Chris Piwuna, who will chair a panel on “Addressing Mental Health Issues Among Staff and Students.” Other panelists include Senator Muntari Dandutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, and Hon. Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education .
The assembly is expected to produce a communique with policy recommendations on university staff welfare, governance, funding, and technology adoption .
