The African Alliance Party (AAP) has demanded immediate registration as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), threatening legal action if the commission fails to comply.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, accused INEC of applying double standards in its registration process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
AAP referenced INEC’s published list of 14 pre-qualified associations from 171 applications, noting that it was among eight groups that successfully completed the document submission phase. The party insists it met all requirements and was unlawfully excluded from the final list of newly registered parties.
The statement particularly questioned the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging it did not participate in the documented process and was not listed on INEC’s official platforms. “On what criterion was NDC registered?” the party asked, calling the commission’s integrity into question.
AAP described its exclusion as a “calculated assault on the nation’s democracy” and vowed to challenge the decision in court, expressing confidence in the judiciary to address the matter.
The dispute highlights growing tensions over political space management as Nigeria approaches the next electoral cycle.
