Eminent Activists Condemn Senate, Plan Protest Over Electronic Transmission

A prominent coalition of civil society leaders has strongly condemned the Senate’s decision to reject the mandatory electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026.

The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), whose steering council includes Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, and Femi Falana (SAN), described the Senate’s action as “deliberate democratic sabotage” and a direct assault on the right of Nigerians to choose their leaders freely.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the coalition warned that removing this safeguard leaves results vulnerable to tampering and upholds a system that thrives on “electoral corruption and stolen mandates.” They demanded the Senate immediately reinstate the clause and publicly identify lawmakers who opposed it.

The group has called for a mass civic action, dubbed ‘The Occupy NASS Protest,’ scheduled for Monday, February 9, 2026, in Abuja. They urged citizens, including students, workers, and professionals, to mobilize peacefully in defense of electoral transparency.

The MCE also advocated for the adoption of a Voters Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system, similar to that used in India, to further secure the electoral process. The coalition asserts that democracy is undermined when votes are not protected from manipulation.
