…Suspect Reportedly Mentally Unstable, Arrested by Community Youths
A middle-aged man, identified as Livingston Nwakanma, has allegedly killed his mother with a machete in Osaa Ukwu community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, throwing the community into mourning and anger.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the deceased, identified simply as Daa Nwaigbe, was reportedly preparing food in the kitchen when her son allegedly attacked her with a machete and inflicted a fatal cut on her neck.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that a community source said Nwakanma had allegedly exhibited troubling behaviour for more than four years. According to the source, the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when Nwakanma allegedly entered the kitchen, knocked his mother down, and attacked her with the machete.
A woman who saw Nwakanma wielding the weapon reportedly raised an alarm and confronted him, asking why he had attacked his mother. The alarm attracted the attention of the deceased’s husband, who rushed to the scene. However, Nwakanma had allegedly inflicted a fatal injury on his mother, who collapsed and died at the sceneÂ
When her husband attempted to intervene, Nwakanma allegedly tried to attack him, but the man escaped and raised the alarm. Nwakanma was subsequently apprehended by youths in the community and handed over to the police .
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Abia State, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the Eastern Ngwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call about the incident. “On arrival, officers met the macheted mother of the suspect, who was lifeless at the scene. A medical professional confirmed her death, and her body was deposited at the morgue. The suspect, who was about to be lynched by a mob, was swiftly rescued by the police and taken to the hospital for medical attention. He is currently in police custody, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing”.
The deceased’s husband, Dede Nwakanma, confirmed the incident, lamenting that his life partner was murdered in cold blood. He disclosed that his son, who committed the crime, had been showing signs of mental instability for four years. The victim was described as a popular trader in her community’s local market.
