…Ethanol Concealed in Bottled Water Pack Intercepted at Ibara Facility
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Ogun State Command, has arrested a woman, identified as Shobowale Balikis, for allegedly attempting to smuggle alcohol into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying vigilant officials intercepted Balikis at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, during a routine screening at the facility.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that security personnel detected ethanol concealed inside a pack of bottled water, disguised as drinking water intended for an inmate. Odukoya said the swift action of correctional officers ensured the illicit substance was detected before it could reach the inmate population.
Balikis has since been handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation, with legal proceedings expected to follow.
Reacting, the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Adesina, said the command maintains a zero-tolerance stance on the smuggling of contraband into custodial centres, noting that the interception reflects the service’s commitment to safety, discipline, and integrity within its facilities.
The arrest comes about four weeks after a similar incident at the same centre, when a woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, was apprehended while allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs to her son, said to be on death row at the facility.
