A United States advocacy firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is too desperate to remain in power as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the firm made the claim in a statement on its verified X handle on Thursday, reacting to Tinubu’s Independence Day speech. naijanews
The firm claimed Tinubu wants to stay in office for self-serving reasons, including head-of-state immunity, a doctrine that can shield sitting heads of state from the jurisdiction of foreign courts. It further claimed that his status as president is the only obstacle to a possible official re-examination of his alleged role in heroin trafficking into the United States in the 1980s and 1990s.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the statement is presented as allegations about possible future legal action, not as the result of any new criminal proceeding. The firm also accused the president of weaponising the police, courts and electoral institutions to rig the 2027 polls. It was reacting to the reported arrest of five men in Borno State for wearing “Tinubu Must Go” T-shirts.
The firm is a private entity. Its statements do not represent official US government policy, and earlier reports identified it as a lobbyist engaged by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. In an earlier post, it made similar claims about state institutions without providing evidence.
At the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not responded to the latest claims.
