…Presidency Says Federal Government Had No Involvement in Niger’s Internal Affairs
The Federal Government has firmly dismissed reports suggesting Nigeria’s involvement in the failed coup attempt in Niger Republic, describing the allegations as unfounded and a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the country’s foreign policy.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Nigerian government issued a statement rejecting any connection to the violent uprising that occurred in Niger’s capital, Niamey, on August 29, 2026. The Presidency insisted that Nigeria respects the sovereignty of its neighbours and had no hand in the internal crisis.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the coup attempt was launched by soldiers from the 101st military base in Niamey, who attempted to storm the presidential palace and seize control. The Nigerien military, with assistance from Russian “Africa Corps” forces, successfully suppressed the rebellion after hours of heavy fighting that saw gunfire and explosions rock the capital.
According to reports, Niger had requested assistance from the Russian paramilitary group to help quell the mutiny, which resulted in several casualties and arrests. The incident marks the latest challenge to the military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, who has ruled Niger since the 2023 coup.
Nigeria had earlier called on “the Nigerien government and people to work together to restore stability and constitutional order in an inclusive and participatory manner”. The country has maintained a firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government in the region while respecting Niger’s internal affairs.
