No fewer than five bodies have been recovered from the tragic boat mishap along the Robertkiri waterways in Kula, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the recovery followed renewed search and rescue efforts by a local security outfit, community chiefs, and other stakeholders in the area from Wednesday into Thursday.
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a tugboat and a speedboat carrying over 15 persons from the community collided. Initially, about 10 persons were feared dead in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
The bodies were recovered on Thursday afternoon amid fresh rescue operations. Local divers and marine security operatives are still combing the waterways in a desperate bid to locate any remaining missing passengers.
CDA News Nigeria reports that water transportation remains a major mode of travel in the riverine areas of Rivers State. However, frequent accidents have raised concerns over safety regulations, overloading, and poor visibility on the waterways. Community leaders have urged authorities to enforce stricter maritime safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
