NLC Tackles TUC Over Opposition to N70,000 Transport Allowance Deal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public sector workers.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that NLC President, Joe Ajaero, faulted the TUC’s stance during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Thursday. He insisted that the TUC was not part of the negotiations that produced the agreement, describing its opposition as “improper”.

“Why is TUC challenging what was gotten for the workers when we stated clearly that NLC was acting alone?” Ajaero asked. “The agreement was not signed by TUC, and you don’t kick against something that you didn’t negotiate, you never asked for”.

The NLC president explained that the rift began after the TUC leadership stated that the next minimum wage review would be due in August 2027. The NLC disagreed, arguing the timing was inconsistent with the law, and proceeded with its own engagement with the Federal Government.

Ajaero added that he would have preferred the TUC to push for a higher allowance rather than reject the arrangement outright. “I would have preferred a situation whereby if NLC was asking for one naira, TUC would be asking for 10 naira, and probably the government would harmonise it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the TUC had earlier rejected the six-month transport intervention, demanding an immediate salary increase and accusing the government of failing to honour previous agreements, including the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers.
