JOHESU UCH Begins Strike As Resident Doctors’ Industrial Action Enters Day 17

IBADAN – The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has commenced an indefinite strike, compounding the healthcare crisis as the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors’ industrial action enters its 17th day.

The dual health sector strikes have significantly crippled medical services at one of Nigeria’s premier teaching hospitals, leaving patients stranded and escalating the ongoing healthcare disruption.

JOHESU UCH chapter, comprising health workers across various categories including pharmacists, nurses, and medical laboratory scientists, declared the strike over unresolved welfare issues and alleged unfair labor practices.

The resident doctors’ strike, which began over two weeks ago, has already led to the shutdown of critical hospital departments, with the latest JOHESU action expected to completely paralyze operations at the tertiary health institution.

Hospital authorities have appealed to both unions to return to negotiations while implementing emergency measures to handle critical cases.
