Lagos Police Probe Viral Video of Officer Assaulted by Mob

The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a widely circulated video showing a uniformed police officer being assaulted by a mob over allegations of theft.

The footage, which emerged online on Wednesday, depicts the officer seated on the ground with blood visible around his mouth, visibly distressed and pleading as an angry crowd encircles him. Dozens of onlookers can be seen recording the incident on their phones.

Voices in the video repeatedly accuse the officer of being a thief, chanting “Ole!” (Yoruba for “Thief”). The specific details of the alleged offence remain unclear. At one point, another officer is seen pushing through the crowd in an attempt to rescue his colleague.

The incident appears to have occurred in a busy part of Lagos, with commercial vehicles and tricycles in the background. A yellow bus with the inscription “Ayedade” is visible in the clip.

In response to the viral video, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the investigation.

“The command has seen the viral video,” Adebisi stated on the social media platform X. “We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”

The Nigerian Police Force has consistently warned the public against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that all allegations should be handled through official and lawful channels.
