LAGOS – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the controlled demolition of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following a devastating Christmas Eve fire that completely ravaged the iconic 22-25 storey building.
The governor, who visited the site on Friday, confirmed that the death toll from the inferno has risen to eight, with five victims identified and three still unidentified. Thirteen people have been rescued so far by emergency teams.
In a post on his official X account and statements at the scene, Sanwo-Olu extended his condolences to the affected families and issued a stern safety directive for the area. “No business or unauthorized activity should be taking place there. The area remains unsafe, and only first responders are permitted on the site,” he stated.
He explained that the demolition decision followed a comprehensive structural review which deemed the building unsafe. “Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods. Some surrounding buildings must also be removed. While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritize the safety of lives above all else,” the Governor added.
Authorities attributed the scale of the disaster to unsafe practices, including the improper use of generators and shops built dangerously close to transformers.
An information center manned by officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has been set up to assist the public and provide updates.
Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians of the government’s commitment to overseeing the recovery process and supporting the victims’ families.
