Umuahia, Abia State — The Abia State Government has attributed the recurring flooding experienced in parts of the state to its natural terrain and the persistent heavy rainfall recorded during the rainy season. CDA News Nigeria gathered that the government urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with environmental safety measures to reduce flood-related risks.
According to information gathered by CDA News Nigeria, state officials explained that the topography of several communities, combined with intense rainfall, has contributed significantly to overflowing drains, erosion, and flooding in vulnerable areas.
The government also noted that efforts are ongoing to improve drainage infrastructure, clear blocked waterways, and implement other flood-control measures aimed at minimizing the impact of seasonal flooding across the state.
“The state’s terrain and the volume of rainfall have contributed significantly to the flooding being experienced. We are intensifying drainage clearance and other mitigation measures, while urging residents to avoid blocking water channels and to observe environmental sanitation.”
Authorities advised residents living in flood-prone communities to monitor weather updates, avoid dumping refuse in drainage systems, and cooperate with emergency agencies where necessary.
