Abia State has a new Commissioner of Police, following the approval of a fresh round of postings by the Police Service Commission (PSC) affecting eight state commands across the country.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that CP Afolabi Wilfred Olutokunbo, formerly Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Training and Development, has been redeployed to head the Abia State Police Command. His appointment was disclosed in a statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Kalu, and further confirmed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, in a statement from Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the statement, the postings followed the promotion of several serving commissioners and were carried out to address pressing operational needs across affected commands. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, approved the deployment as part of a broader push to strengthen leadership and enhance operational effectiveness within the Nigeria Police Force nationwide.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Olutokunbo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Bayero University, Kano. He brings to the Abia posting a wide-ranging career within the Force, having previously served as Commandant of the Police College, Maiduguri, Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Zones 3 and 6. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Speaking during the PSC’s meeting where the postings were approved, the Chairman of the session, retired Justice Paul Galumje, charged the newly deployed commissioners, including Olutokunbo, to uphold the rule of law, remain neutral in the discharge of their duties, and carry out their responsibilities with diligence and professionalism.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Olutokunbo takes over the Abia Command at a time when the state continues to grapple with lingering security concerns across parts of the South-East region, with expectations high that his experience across multiple police formations will strengthen operational effectiveness in the state. Other commissioners affected in the same nationwide reshuffle include postings to Plateau, Bayelsa, Cross River, Anambra, Edo, Jigawa, and Delta States.
The Abia State Government and residents are expected to formally receive the new Commissioner as he settles into the command, with further details of his security priorities anticipated in the coming days.
