The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju Adewole, is setting a bold new standard for policing in the state — and he is doing it personally.
In a video that went viral on social media, Adepoju was seen stopping at a checkpoint along a major highway where officers had blocked traffic under the pretext of inspecting trucks. Confronting the officers directly, the CP demanded their names and ranks and ordered them to dismantle the blockade immediately.
The statewide inspection covered checkpoints along the East-West Road corridor in Ikwerre and Emohua Local Government Areas, and was carried out in compliance with a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordering Commissioners across the country to end illegal roadblocks, extortion, and officer misconduct.
“We have directed that nobody should block the road. Officers should position themselves strategically and carry out stop-and-search operations without obstructing traffic,” Adepoju said, warning that officers who violate the directive would face punishment.
The action did not stop on the highways. Adepoju also removed the Divisional Police Officer of Oyigbo Division, CSP Ugochukwu Ijeoma, following allegations of extortion and misconduct captured in a viral video by anti-police brutality activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
Members of the public were urged to report any officer involved in misconduct or extortion through the Police Public Relations Office and the command’s control room.
Port Harcourt residents have widely praised the CP’s hands-on approach as a refreshing departure from business as usual.
