Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dealing a significant blow to the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections .
In a statewide broadcast from Yola on Friday, February 27, 2026, Fintiri described the move as a strategic decision taken “strictly in the best interest of Adamawa State and its people” . He explained that after extensive consultations across the 21 local government areas, his administration resolved to align Adamawa politically with the APC at the national level under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda .
The governor declared that the defection would not be symbolic but structural. “We are moving into the APC with all our 226 wards, 21 local government areas, all elected and appointed members, and our full political machinery,” Fintiri stated .
The announcement followed a wave of high-profile resignations that began earlier in the week. Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, and 14 other lawmakers had resigned from the PDP, signaling a coordinated political shift .
Fintiri’s defection brings the number of APC-controlled states to 30, leaving the PDP with only three governors. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party, and Accord Party have one governor each .
The move carries significant political weight as Adamawa is widely regarded as the political base of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate .
President Tinubu had visited Adamawa earlier, commissioning projects and praising the governor’s performance, fueling speculation about the impending defection .
