The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) linking it to the recent shooting incident in Benin City, Edo State, describing the claims as “utterly delusional” and a breach of due process.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused the ADC of rushing to judgment by blaming the APC even before law enforcement agencies commenced investigations.
“The ADC and its leaders are insufferable jesters. They weaponise dark humour as a strategy to deceive, distract and disrupt in desperation for public sympathy,” Morka said. He added that by drawing such baseless conclusions, the ADC had made itself “the accuser, investigator, prosecutor, and judge in its own matter.”
The controversy stems from a shooting on Tuesday at the ADC secretariat in Benin City and later at the residence of former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, during a gathering that included former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and other ADC chieftains. Gunshots reportedly damaged vehicles and property, triggering widespread condemnation.
The ADC had, in a statement dated February 25, 2026, alleged that the APC was responsible for the attack, describing it as part of a pattern of political intimidation against opposition parties.
However, the APC suggested that investigators should scrutinize the ADC, its leaders, and members as possible suspects, alleging that the party is plagued by internal leadership and factional struggles. “Investigation of this incident should begin with a thorough scrutiny of the ADC, its leaders and members as prime suspects,” Morka stated, noting widely reported violent clashes among factional leaders within the ADC.
While condemning political violence in any form, the APC called on the police and other security agencies to conduct an expeditious investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. The party insisted it has “absolutely no role or responsibility” in the incident, stating it remains focused on governance and recent electoral successes across the country.
