NDC Appoints New Deputy National Chairmen, Others Amid Party Turmoil

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has approved a series of key appointments amid the growing crisis threatening to tear the opposition party apart.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party announced the appointment of Alhaji Bello Tanko as Deputy National Chairman (North) and Chief Mrs. Ngozi Okonkwo as Deputy National Chairman (South). Other appointments include Hon. Musa Buba as National Organising Secretary and Barrister Funke Adeyemo as National Legal Adviser.

The party leadership described the appointments as part of efforts to strengthen the NWC and address administrative gaps exposed by the recent primary election disputes.

“We are building a strong, united team to steer the NDC through this challenging period. These appointments reflect our commitment to competence and inclusivity,” the statement read.

However, critics within the party have described the move as a desperate attempt by the leadership to consolidate control amid rising dissent from aggrieved aspirants and factional battles.

The ongoing legal fight between presidential candidate Peter Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo, as well as unresolved primary disputes in Lagos, Kaduna, and other states, continue to plague the party.

Political analysts warn that without genuine reconciliation, the new appointments may do little to calm the storm.
