The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has raised a devastating alarm over the mass shutdown of manufacturing companies across the South-East geopolitical zone, attributing the alarming trend directly to the crushing burden of soaring energy costs that have made production increasingly unviable.
MAN warned that unless urgent and decisive intervention is made by the Federal Government and relevant regulatory authorities, the South-East risks losing a significant portion of its industrial base — with catastrophic consequences for employment, economic output, and regional development.
According to the association, manufacturers in the South-East are currently grappling with astronomical electricity bills, over-reliance on expensive diesel-powered generators, and the absence of stable, affordable grid power — a combination that has pushed operating costs far beyond sustainable levels for many businesses.
MAN noted that several companies have been left with no choice but to shut down operations entirely or scale back production dramatically, leading to widespread job losses, reduced household incomes, and a shrinking tax base across the zone.
The association further stressed that the South-East, already battling the economic impact of insecurity, poor infrastructure, and sit-at-home disruptions, can ill afford the additional devastation of an energy-driven industrial collapse.
MAN called on the Federal Government to urgently address the energy crisis, fast-track power sector reforms, reduce the cost of gas supply to industries, and provide targeted fiscal relief to manufacturers struggling to stay afloat.
The association also appealed to state governments across the South-East to create enabling environments for businesses, including tax incentives, improved security, and investment in local energy solutions.
Economic analysts warn that if the shutdown trend continues unchecked, the South-East could face a full-scale deindustrialisation that would set the region’s economic development back by decades.
