Amupitan Warns ADC Against Holding Convention Without INEC Supervision

Senator Amupitan has warned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) about the legal and political consequences of holding a party convention without the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In a statement released on Thursday, Amupitan emphasized that adherence to electoral laws is crucial for the legitimacy of any party activity, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He described any attempt to conduct unsupervised conventions as a violation of Nigerian electoral regulations.

“The ADC must understand that holding a convention without INEC’s oversight can have serious legal ramifications, including potential nullification of outcomes and internal disputes,” Amupitan said. “Compliance with INEC ensures transparency, fairness, and recognition under the law.”

The warning comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the ADC, with factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe vying for control. INEC had earlier derecognized both factions pending resolution of ongoing court cases, making unsupervised party activities a sensitive issue.

Political analysts note that failure to comply with INEC directives could weaken the party’s standing, fuel internal divisions, and invite judicial intervention. Amupitan urged party leaders to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and adherence to statutory requirements.

As the ADC navigates its internal challenges, Amupitan’s warning underscores the importance of legal compliance and institutional oversight in maintaining party legitimacy and political stability.
