The powerful blocs within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are pushing back against the Rainbow Coalition championed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, warning it could hurt both party candidates and President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Wike insists the coalition is 100 percent behind Tinubu, but opponents argue that fielding candidates across multiple parties could confuse rural voters and split Tinubu’s vote tally, with tension already brewing in Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River states.
Wike accused Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of leading a campaign against him, insisting his focus remains delivering Tinubu’s re-election despite personal disputes.
Sources close to APC governors said concerns were raised directly with the President at a recent Abuja meeting, warning the arrangement could fragment votes, citing precedents from Oyo in 2023 and the South-West in 2003 where split-ticket strategies backfired.
In Kwara, several APC lawmakers, including Senator Saliu Mustapha, have defected to Wike’s PDP, deepening the rift. Arise News Politics Editor Sunna Sambo warned the coalition’s structure could genuinely injure Tinubu’s chances.
Wike remained defiant, insisting his mission is to make opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi “uncomfortable” ahead of 2027.
