BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has denied reports claiming that Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, was detained by United States authorities after attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the football body described the reports circulating on social media as false and urged the public to disregard the misinformation. The AFA maintained that there was no incident involving the Argentine leader during or after the tournament.
The clarification followed widespread online speculation after Argentina’s appearance in the World Cup final. The football association stressed that President Milei completed his official engagements without any interference from US authorities.
“The reports alleging that the President was detained in the United States are completely false and without any factual basis,” the Argentine Football Association said in its statement.
The AFA urged media organisations and the public to rely on verified information from official sources, warning that the spread of false claims could mislead the public and undermine confidence in credible reporting.
