Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9, AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu Dies After Brave Battle With Cancer

The Nigeria Police Force is in mourning following the passing of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 9, Kanayo Uzuegbu — a distinguished and highly respected senior police officer who lost his courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service, professional excellence, and unwavering commitment to law and order in Nigeria.

AIG Uzuegbu’s death represents the loss of a senior pillar within the Nigeria Police Force — a career officer whose decades of service to the institution and to the Nigerian state earned him the deep respect and admiration of colleagues, subordinates, and the communities he served across the length and breadth of the country.

As the AIG commanding Zone 9 — which covers Umuahia, Abia State — AIG Uzuegbu was responsible for overseeing police operations across a geopolitically significant zone in the South-East, where the challenges of insecurity, communal tensions, and law enforcement demand experienced, steady, and courageous leadership of precisely the kind he provided throughout his distinguished tenure.

Colleagues and police officers who served under and alongside AIG Uzuegbu have described him as a principled, dedicated, and people-centred officer — one who combined professional toughness with genuine compassion for the communities policed, and who led by personal example in demonstrating the highest standards of integrity, discipline, and commitment to justice that the Nigeria Police Force aspires to embody.

His battle with cancer was described by those close to him as fought with extraordinary courage, dignity, and faith — maintaining his characteristic composure and dedication to duty even as his health deteriorated, refusing to allow his illness to diminish his spirit or his concern for the institution and people he loved and served.
