A Nigerian court has sentenced the mother and sister of a notorious bandit to 40 years in prison for aiding terrorism and providing support to criminal networks operating in the North-West region.
The convicts were found guilty of supplying food, intelligence, and financial assistance to the bandit leader, whose gang has been responsible for mass abductions, killings, and destruction of property across multiple states.
Prosecutors told the court that the women actively facilitated the bandit’s operations by relaying information about security movements and harbouring gang members in their residence. The judge ruled that their actions directly contributed to the sustained terror campaign against rural communities.
Security analysts have praised the verdict as a significant step toward dismantling the support structures that enable banditry in Nigeria. “Targeting enablers and financiers is critical to weakening these criminal networks,” a defence strategist noted.
The sentencing comes amid renewed government efforts to prosecute individuals who aid terrorists, including family members who provide logistical or financial support.
