Bauchi Senator Denies Bandit Link, Insists Viral Videos Are Fabricated

…Shehu Buba Says Fact-Check Reveals Two Unrelated Clips Were Merged to Tarnish His Reputation

Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has dismissed allegations and viral videos linking him to bandit kingpins, describing the materials as deliberately manipulated to damage his reputation .

CDA News Nigeria reports that Buba, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, said a fact-check established that the viral footage combined two unrelated clips . According to him, one clip showed Kaduna-based Hajj returnees who visited his residence in 2023 speaking Fulfulde, while another showed different individuals displaying passports and speaking English .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the senator described the allegations as “false, malicious” and part of a coordinated campaign driven by financial motives and partisan interests . He challenged anyone with credible evidence of wrongdoing to submit it to appropriate authorities, insisting he had “nothing to hide and nothing to fear from any legitimate investigation” .

Buba traced the controversy to September 2024 when he condemned the killing of two charcoal sellers by a militia group in Bauchi State. He said his intervention subsequently resulted in accusations linking him with banditry . He also revealed that a young man, Hassan Husseini, whom he had enrolled in school as an orphan, later recorded visitors to his residence and used the materials to form the basis of allegations circulated on social media .

The senator disclosed that he has filed a defamation suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja, and submitted a criminal complaint in Niamey, Niger Republic, seeking prosecution of those behind the allegations . He urged journalists and civil society organisations to independently verify the videos rather than accept viral social media materials at face value . He stressed that “Nigeria cannot defeat insecurity by military force alone” and that sustainable security requires community engagement, dialogue, and intelligence gathering .
