Nigerian High Commissioner-Designate to South Africa, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has called on the South African government to protect Nigerians in the country and bring to justice those responsible for the killing of two Nigerian nationals in Johannesburg.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that in a statement on Saturday, Fani-Kayode expressed shock over the murders of Bishop Michael Taiwo Fakunle and Mr James Uchechukwu Nwankwo, describing them as the seventh and eighth Nigerians killed in South Africa in 2026, with four of the eight deaths allegedly involving South African security personnel.
According to him, Fakunle was shot dead at his Johannesburg residence on September 4 after reportedly receiving a series of threats, while Nwankwo died the following day, allegedly following harsh interrogation by South African Police Service officers.
The killings have drawn condemnation from several Nigerian groups, including the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa and the Nigeria Consulate General in Johannesburg, both of which have demanded thorough investigations. Reactions have also continued to trail the incident within Nigeria’s diaspora and civil society circles, including from the Southeast Young Leaders Consultative Forum, whose Secretary-General, Ms Odor Augustina, has joined calls for accountability and stronger protection for Nigerians abroad.
