Breaking: Court Sentences Ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman to 75 Years in Prison Over ₦33.8bn Fraud

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years imprisonment for his involvement in a ₦33.8 billion money laundering and fraud scandal.

Delivering the judgment, Justice James Omotosho convicted the former minister on all 12 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court handed Mamman a seven-year jail term for each of the 10 counts, alongside an additional five years combined for the remaining two counts. Justice Omotosho ruled that the prison sentences must run consecutively without any option of a fine.

The conviction is tied to the criminal diversion of public funds originally earmarked for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects between 2019 and 2021. The anti-graft agency successfully proved that the siphoned billions were converted to foreign currencies through Bureau de Change (BDC) operators to acquire luxury properties.Because Mamman absconded and was sentenced in absentia, the court issued a bench warrant.

The judge ordered all security agencies, including Interpol, to arrest him immediately. His sentence will commence on the day of his arrest. Furthermore, the court ordered the final forfeiture of his choice properties in Abuja and all recovered foreign currencies to the Federal Government.
