ABUJA, NIGERIA — Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), over allegations of money laundering and fraud exceeding N500 billion.
According to reports on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Abdullahi was taken into custody in Abuja following an ongoing probe into large-scale financial irregularities. Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that investigators are scrutinizing suspicious movements of funds linked to the agency.
The arrest follows a petition filed in December 2025 by a civil society organization alleging corruption in the commission, including violation of procurement laws. Abdullahi, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023, is expected to remain in detention for questioning.
This investigation marks one of the largest corruption probes involving a federal agency in recent times. The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement, but Abdullahi is expected to face charges upon conclusion of the investigation.
