About 78 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government have earmarked nearly ₦400 billion in the 2026 budget for the construction and rehabilitation of community halls, mosques, traditional rulers’ palaces, market squares and civic centres.
CDA News Nigeria independently verified that the 2026 budget N400bn allocations are contained in budget proposals reviewed by The PUNCH. CDA News Nigeria gathered the report from the publication.
According to the findings, more than half of the proposed allocations are for projects such as the supply of grains, motorcycles and tricycles, sponsorship of community thrift societies, construction of museums and mini-stadia, as well as other constituency-related projects.
Analysts expressed concern that many of the 2026 budget N400bn allocations have little connection to the statutory responsibilities of several MDAs. They argued that scarce public resources should instead be directed towards priority sectors such as healthcare, education, security, roads, electricity and other critical infrastructure.
The report cited examples including the National Building and Road Research Institute and the National Productivity Centre, which reportedly included projects such as palace construction, market development, mosque renovations and community halls in their budgets.
CDA News Nigeria reports that experts warned the 2026 budget N400bn allocations could weaken fiscal discipline and reduce funding available for strategic national development if not subjected to greater scrutiny and accountability.
