Building Collapse Kills Mother, Daughter in Okpoko

A woman and her 14-year-old daughter have died after a three-storey building under construction collapsed at Anata Anaba, Okpoko, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the collapse happened at about 9:45 pm, according to residents, and trapped the mother and her daughter inside their apartment in a neighbouring bungalow. Reports differ on the exact date, with some citing Wednesday night and an Anambra State Government account describing Thursday morning, October 8.

Eyewitnesses said the building made a loud noise and its walls cracked before it came down, throwing residents into panic. Emergency responders rescued some other people trapped in the rubble and took them to hospital. The remains of the mother and daughter were later recovered and taken to a morgue.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, visited the site with the member representing Ogbaru State Constituency I, Noble Igwe. The commissioner blamed the collapse on negligence and substandard materials, and said the authorities had earlier served a stop-work notice on the building. He directed that it be demolished along with other unapproved structures nearby.

Some residents alleged that the land is waterlogged and unsuitable for a three-storey structure, and that advice to stop at two floors was ignored. Those claims have not been verified, and the building’s owner and engineers had not commented at the time of filing.

The Ogbaru Local Government chairman, Nnamdi Ifejika, expressed grief over the deaths, which he described as a painful loss.

The cause of the collapse is still to be formally established.
