ABUJA — Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, was officially sworn in on Thursday as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Bola Tinubu.

At the ceremony in Abuja, President Tinubu charged the new INEC boss to serve with “the highest level of integrity, dedication and patriotism.” He emphasized that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process must be “beyond reproach” and pointed to the upcoming Anambra governorship election as a key test.

In response, Prof. Amupitan promised to uphold his constitutional duty. “I was given a clear charge to ensure credible, fair and free election,” he told reporters. “I will ensure that that is done.”

The new Chairman succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and has outlined plans to reform the electoral system and rebuild public trust in the commission. His appointment follows confirmation by the Senate.
