COAS Shaibu Visits Rwanda Genocide Memorial, Urges Nigerians to Rise Above Ethnic and Religious Divides

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, has visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda, calling for national unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the visit took place on Monday, October 19, 2026, during his official working visit to Rwanda. In a statement, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the memorial houses the remains of about 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

According to the statement, the visit highlighted the consequences of ethnic hatred, religious intolerance, divisive rhetoric and violent extremism. It said the tragedy offers lessons for Nigeria on the need to rise above ethnic, religious and political differences and to reject hate speech.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Army also stressed the roles of responsible leadership, early conflict prevention and sustained civil-military cooperation in preventing violence. It said national unity remains fundamental to lasting peace, security and development.

The trip runs from October 18 to 23, 2026, at the invitation of the Rwanda Defence Force’s Army Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi. The Army said the engagement is meant to deepen defence collaboration and explore joint approaches to counterterrorism and regional stability.

The same day, Gen. Shaibu also visited Rwanda’s Campaign Against Genocide Museum. The Army said that visit reaffirmed its commitment to civilian protection.

The visit comes amid continuing security challenges in Nigeria.
