The President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Afekhide-Ernest Omoti, has condemned attacks on doctors and demanded safe workplaces for medical professionals across Nigeria.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Prof. Omoti spoke in Akure, Ondo State. He said the association would keep demanding adequate protection, appropriate equipment, decent accommodation where necessary, and conditions of service that match the responsibilities of the profession.
He insisted that doctors’ safety is not negotiable, adding that safer doctors mean safer patients.
On brain drain, the NMA president said doctors should not be expected to stay in Nigeria on patriotism alone. He called for better staffing levels, adequate rest, regular medical examinations and confidential psychological support for doctors.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Ondo State NMA chairman, Dr. Arohunmolase, said the state had lost over 400 doctors to migration and other forms of attrition in five years. He said about 500 doctors now remain in public health institutions, down from roughly 900 to 1,000 at one time. He appealed to the Ondo State Government to improve doctors’ pay and working conditions to attract and retain medical personnel and reduce burnout.
The remarks follow an earlier warning by Prof. Omoti against harassment of health workers. He said offenders would be prosecuted under the National Policy Against Intimidation and Harassment of Healthcare Workers.
The NMA says a safe and well-supported medical workforce is central to quality healthcare delivery.
