A Federal High Court has rejected a request by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore for a long adjournment in the ongoing defamation case filed against him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Sowore’s legal team had asked the court for an extended adjournment to enable them to adequately prepare their defence. However, the presiding judge declined the request, ruling that the matter should proceed without unnecessary delay in the interest of justice.
The court subsequently fixed a new date for the continuation of the trial, directing both parties to ensure they are fully prepared for the next hearing.
The defamation suit centres on statements allegedly made by Sowore, which President Tinubu contends were defamatory. Sowore has maintained his position in the matter, while the court continues to hear arguments from both sides.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the case has attracted widespread public interest due to the prominence of the parties involved and its implications for freedom of expression and the rule of law.
Legal observers say the court’s refusal to grant a lengthy adjournment underscores the judiciary’s commitment to the timely determination of cases.
The trial is expected to continue on the adjourned date as both the plaintiff and the defendant present their respective arguments before the court.
