The Osun State Government has formally requested police backing to enforce its takeover of local government administration following a recent court ruling.
The state, currently governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), secured a judicial victory that it believes validates its authority over the 30 local government areas. However, opposition elements have resisted the transition, prompting the government to seek security enforcement.
In a letter to the Nigeria Police Force, state officials urged immediate deployment of officers to protect council secretariats and ensure a smooth handover of power. The request has intensified political tensions in the South-West state, where local governance has been embroiled in legal battles for months.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), which previously controlled the councils, has rejected the move, citing pending appeals and accusing the PDP of undermining democratic processes. Critics warn that using police force could escalate violence and destabilize grassroots governance.
Legal analysts say the situation underscores recurring conflicts between state governments and local council authorities across Nigeria. The Supreme Court had previously ruled on financial autonomy for LGs, but implementation remains contentious.
Residents fear the dispute could disrupt essential services, including waste management and primary healthcare, if the deadlock persists.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official response to the state government’s request.
